Nature never stops inspiring!
This has to be one of the most fascinating things I've yet to see in the tree planting world!
I had did a post awhile back about Dave Breslin who landed up with these thick branches cut from an older Mrs Perry apple tree and he just stuck them in the ground as in the pic.
I remember thinking at the time no way can anything happen here and when Dave said he hammers these thick branches into the ground with a lump hammer I was even more sceptical.
But here you go guys, Dave had planted a few like this and the others had buds on them but this was one I thought would never do anything as this thick bit of branch didn't even have a bud on it, I've been going back every few days or so watching this one and it has just put out its first set of leaves from the side of the branch, unbelievable!
From my understanding there are only a few varieties that will self root like this, Mrs Perry, Irish Pitcher and Lough Key Crab and from what I believe is the way you tell self rooters is by these nipple looking things that you can see at the branch union in the pic, these are said to be the tree trying to grow roots into mid air and this is an indicator of self rooting type apple trees!
Thanks again Dave for taking the time to come up and educate the phantom planters!

Peace and love!
I challenge you to phantom plant a tree! Anywhere, anytime, any place.....
