Some stuff I'm learning.

Have been planting all our apple trees at the new orchard sightly above the ground then mounding them up with compost.

I think over here in Northern Ireland this is a great idea as it never stops raining here and this way of planting lets the rain run off the base of the tree more preventing puddling.

I also like the idea of keeping the bottom stem of the tree exposed allowing it plenty of air and circulation. I've noticed lots of trees that I've planted slightly above ground level have thrived better.

This way of planting is very easily done with small trees as they wont need supported but for bigger trees planting above the ground they may need supported.

I then put 3 bamboo canes around the tree and wrap chicken mesh around to protect from rabbits.

With fruit trees many types of trees guards can cook your trees in hot days and create too much moisture around the stem potentially causing types of diseases like canker.

All this method of planting is a lot more time and effort, and its a lot more costly also, but I want this orchard to be right.

Couldn't believe it too!!!

I left some of the trees exposed without protection for one night and the rabbits were straight in nibbling on the bark. Even though the landowner says he has never seen a rabbit in 2 years its just not worth the risk leaving your trees unprotected in the countryside.

In the cities though I've never needed tree protection once.

Back at it here today again!!!

Love it....
