Yew tree in flower.
Yew tree in flower.
Hard to spot these tiny little flowers and even harder to get a clear pic of them.
Every part of this tree is deadly poisonous, apart from the red flesh of the berry when it appears in autumn. It is not recommended though to even put the berry in your mouth as the seed inside is deadly. Just a few of these tiny seeds ingested and your a goner!
Then you have the Juniper, which is sometimes referred too as the mountain yew, its berry has many healing benefits and I've read before that the juniper berry is the antidote for the yew poison. Not recommended to test this out though.
Its amazing how closely related these two trees are as they are the only conifers that produce berries and not cones, yet one kills and the other heals.
This yew in the pics is one I phantom planted a few years ago, you know no one really knows how long these trees live for. Some say they are immortal and others say around ten thousand years.
Many around the UK and Ireland are estimated to be around 4-5 thousand year old, but again no one really knows.
These trees outdate the churches they are at by thousands of years. What where these sites before the church and why did the church decide to build here?
Phantom Planting trees like the yew is a good deed that will go on for a millenia. I cant think of a better selfless action. How many berries will a yew give out over a 5000 year lifespan. How many birds will feed off this good deed over that period of time.
Have a good weekend guys.
