Grafting time!

For the next few weeks I'm going to be so busy working in the polytunnel grafting up 1000 native Irish apple trees.

Grafting is the process of collecting native varieties as scions/cuttings from old orchards and attaching them onto a new fresh mm106 rootstock.

The rootstock will provide new vigor and growth for the tree but the cutting/graft that we add onto the tip will stay as the variety that I have selected from old Irish orchards. Basically it's like turning an old tree into a new tree again.

I have a big passion for filling up our streets and estates with native Irish varieties.

I've noticed they grow better here with less maintenance. I wonder why? Ulster trees for Ulster bees guys!

These varieties are meant to be here.

Scottish varieties grow so well here in the wet Northern Irish climate also. Guess we have much the same climate and ecosystem, right back to the times of Dalriada.

I like to plant Scottish varieties too. James Grieves being one of the best growing trees I've ever seen. Never have I seen one get sick.
