RIP Samuel McCartan
Had phantom planted a memorial apple tree in the estate on Sunday in memory of Samuel McCartan and got a message yesterday with some pics saying the family had visited the tree and put some of Samuel's ashes around it.
I never told the family I was planting this, thought it would be a nice surprise for them. Samuel grew up not far from where I planted the tree.
We phantom planted right next to another memorial apple tree that was for my mates dad.
Have been meaning to plant this tree for Samuel for sometime now as he was in the same class as me at school. It was a James Grieves variety apple tree which is a very heaver cropper and a dual apple also, meaning if you pick early its a cooking apple but if you leave till its ready to drop its an eating apple.
Over the past few days I've been going and gathering cuttings from some of my healthiest looking trees around the estate. My thinking is that if these trees are doing really well in a specific area then maybe its best to get cuttings/scions from that area to grow up and phantom plant them again in the estate.
It also real handy that I have started to tag the trees with the variety, I'm building something really special over my lifetime, right on my doorstep in the Buddhahood!
Hundreds and hundreds of apple trees are already phantom planted around the estate with no end in sight. My dream and vision is to fill every green space around making it the biggest urban orchard housing estate in the world. It probably already is at the minute with around 700 fruit trees, but we're far from finished.
All these trees will be mapped and added to the phantom planters tree map so that everyone can find the trees to sample some free fruit.
Many people have already been using the tree map, a few people said they used it last year and sampled lots of the apples.
I've noticed some of the apple trees growing in enclosed streets are flying ahead. Estate streets and cul-de-sacs are like natural walled gardens creating heat traps and the perfect climate for growing apple trees.
Its amazing what you learn and observe by doing.
Lots of people say to me that I should go and do talks on tree planting, what am I going to say? Dig a hole and make sure its the right way up!!! Cause thats all I do and thats all it takes.
The first tree I ever planted I did it for a laugh, no way did I think it would survive. After a few years I remember me and my son counted approx 500 of the best tasting apples ever!
I couldn't believe it, it really got my head thinking that these apple trees should be everywhere!
All I did back then was buy a tree at about the price of a round of drinks, dug a hole and made sure it was the right way up. In hot weather I watered it.
I remember at the time of planting a so called professional tree planter, well he give the impression he was anyway as he worked for the National Trust.
But he stopped to see what I was doing talking in fancy Latin like some constipated tree people like to show off with the fancy Latin all the time.
But he really came across like he knew it all. He said that tree will die, its not the time of year to be planting trees, your wasting your time he said.
I never listened and I planted it anyway! I never lost any sleep over a night on the drink and drugs and I'm certainly not going to loose any sleep over a tree that cost 40 quid!
All these years later the tree is still standing proud and I know its Latin names also!
Never let anyone put you off planting trees or connecting to nature. Its whats missing from society guys is our connection and interaction with trees and nature.
Guys like this that run around spouting off their Latin make tree planting look kinda geeky and off putting for us in the working classes to get involved in.
To be honest if this guy came into my estate when I was a kid trying to get me into trees I would have hit him on the head with an apple calling him a snobby hippy!
Phantom planting trees is for everyone!
