New orchard getting phantom planted today!

Heading out here today to phantom plant a community orchard on a large field in the estate. I have a new method of planting I'm going to experiment with. It will be more like a wild fruit forest rather than a maintained orchard.

I've around 50 mixed heritage apple trees to plant and I'm going to plant them all quite close in a circular island shape in the field. I will then get a mower and cut the grass around the edge of the island of trees to encourage the council mowers to just keep cutting around it.

It will be all left for the grass to grow wild in and around the trees. You see woodland trust do these types of plantations with other native trees, but I have never seen one with native fruit trees. I love it when apple trees are left to go wild with fruit, just falling and being left. It creates such a biodiversity hotspot. I have seen more life around wild fruit trees than most other types of tree.

All my apple trees are grafted onto mm106 rootstock which means they will all grow into massive trees in many years. So many say that apple trees left like this need pruned and maintained otherwise they will get diseased. I've also heard on the other hand that if you never prune your apple trees you will never need to prune them. Its once you start pruning you always have to prune.

I have seen some wild phantom planted apple trees that are around 50 years old, never pruned. no disease and give out thousands of apples every year!

Theres only one way to find out and thats by doing. So many give advice of whats the wrong way, but when you ask many of them have they tried the so called wrong way to make sure, they haven't! Many just go by what someone has said.

Its like my juniper cuttings post I did the other day. A guy commented saying I've just wasted my time as junipers will only root when using mycorrhizal fungi. Funny that as a few years ago all my junipers rooted without mycorrhizal fungi, they even rooted without any rooting gel and they were just set on my mates windowsill with a plastic cup over them.

Another Dutch growing expert with letters after his name said my grafts one year would not take as they were second years growth scions. I asked him has he ever tried second years growth scions to see and he didn't, Just the text book says so. All my grafts took.

The first tree I ever planted a guy who worked for the national trust stopped and says its not the right time of year to be planting trees and it will die. 11 years later I'm doing pullups on this apple tree.

I have always wanted to see wild fruit forest on our landscapes. Undergrowth of berries and bramble and a canopy of fruit. Today this is what I'm going to create. Come back in 10 years guys and see the outcome. My phantom planting antics is like doing a PHD for me.

10 years later with thousands of fruit trees planted nothing has changed in the way I plant trees. Just make sure its the right way up. KISS - "keep it simple stupid"... Dont over complicate things. If one dies plant 10 more in remembrance. Just Keep on planting and chanting. Nature needs us and we need nature.

Begging bowl day too guys, haven't put this out in a while. All our workd doesn't run on fresh air. We need all the help we can get. I don't get funding from anyone. Please if you can help donate on the link below or into my UK bank account.
