This day last year!
Was this day last year my big Glasgow pal came over on the boat with him mum to plant his fathers ashes in with an apple tree.
This marked the first tree planted at our new Lisnabreeny Community Orchard.
(So many saying also on this old post that ashes will kill the tree, I have planted many apple trees with loved ones ashes in with the planting and all these trees are doing fine. And this tree is thriving today!
What I always say to people in the tree world when they are saying that this is wrong and will kill your trees is, have you did it the wrong way and watched for yourself? Most are only going by what they are told or read. I have did so many so called wrong things in tree planting and most of my plantings are still thriving today!
Even RHS change their advice from time to time on the right ways to plant trees. The experts are still learning too.)
We even got apples from this tree summer past and I picked them and brought them over to my big pals mum and she was well pleased. She was wondering how to preserve them as a souvenir, but I said there will be plenty more next year for you.
The story behind this variety of apple tree which I named "Phantom Special" is pretty amazing.
There was this old apple tree I always visited for many years growing up to get apples from, I always brought kids there to pick from also over the years.
One day I landed down and the old apple tree had been ripped out by the roots and gone to make way for a new housing development. I was not happy at all.
I found a few broken branches lying on the ground and did a post on here to see if anyone had any ideas on how to grow these broken branches. I knew nothing of grafting back then myself.
Des Scholes from Nairn in Scotland messaged saying if I post them over to him he could try and graft them onto new rootstock. I wrapped them up the way he wanted, posted them over to Des and within 48 hours he had them grafted onto new rootstock and posted back to me. It was just a waiting game then to wait and see if the grafts would take. That Spring came and out of the broken branches I posted him I got around 7 apple trees. which I named "Phantom Special"...
I kept these apple trees in pots for a couple of years for a special place and time to plant them. The creation of our new orchard came about and this would be the place for the Phantom Special apple trees. The Scottish connection with these trees is pretty magical also. Sent to Scotland, back From Scotland, the family come to plant a memorial tree form Scotland then I brought the apples back over to Scotland! Unreal....
And one day when these are big enough I am going to graft many more Phantom Special apple trees and phantom plant them in the area of the new housing development where the mother tree once stood!
