Mrs Perry self rooting apple tree
Was away yesterday on the hunt for the Mrs Perry self rooting apple variety. There are a handful of Irish apple trees that are self rooting, meaning you just stick these longer pieces as you can see in the back of my van straight into the ground and they will turn into trees. You dont even need to dig a hole, just get a 2/3 year old branch and force it straight into the ground about a foot deep and they will become trees. This has been tried and tested by myself over the years.
What has prompted me to do this is when grown from a branch like this the tree will automatically grow into a full vigorous tree which will be perfect for wild phantom planting and forgot about.
When grown on rootstock and the trees have to compete with grass and other things growing around it, it slows down the growth of the trees. Most rootstock grown trees do need to be managed to help them along to reach their full potential. Perfect for maintained orchards. Also rootstock grown trees will only grow a certain size, making them perfect for gardens, estates and orchards. Self rooting trees however will take over the place and grow into massive trees with thousands upon thousands of apples. Perfect for the wild.
This Mrs Perry apple originated in Donegal and its apples stay on the tree right up until January. Thats how I knew I was at the Mrs perry tree yesterday in the orchard as it was the only tree will loads of massive apples still lying under it.
It's a multi purpose apple meaning if picked early is good for cooking and if picked late is great for eating and juicing. A very reliable heavy cropper also and the perfect tree for phantom planting. If this tree thrives in Donegal it will thrive anywhere.
I took a load of smaller cuttings also as I'm going to experiment with them in my LED lit propagator. I cut the cuttings at an angle just below the bud growth, scrapped the bark lightly and dipped in rooting gel. I just used normal compost as thats all I had, but hear top soil might be better for rooting. It will be very interesting to see what happens here and watch the cuttings come out of dormancy early too. With this being a self rooting variety I'm fairly confident this should work.
A few other of the Irish self rooting varieties are Sheeps Snout, Ardcarin Russet and Irish Pitcher.
Its to be a great day today, so will be heading to the Lisnabreeny community orchard to plant more trees. Bought a load of slate and tyre markers for making up signs also. Going to put these signs at each of the oak trees I'm planting in the spiritual spiral we have made telling of the name, age and girth of the parent oak tree.
Keep on planting and chanting guys and putting out them positive ripples. Its needed more now than ever.
If you would like to support my life work and our community orchard we would be very grateful guys.
