Great weather for some orchard maintenance
What a day yesterday for working away at the Lisnabreeny orchard, the sun shined all day!
Last year we put chicken wire around all the trees to protect from rabbits, but it turns out there are no rabbits in the area and now the cages we made are becoming a bit of a hindrance with weeds growing up all inside them making it harder for us to keep the bases of the trees clear off weeds and cutting around them too.
So yesterday we made at start removing this wire and giving the trees a check over, making sure any memorial tags are not too tight and cutting off any dead wood. Just basically showing the trees some love and attention. They do feel it. Conscious care grows conscious trees.
We have a few hundred of these to do and the weather is looking great for the next while so perfect time to get out and work with the trees.
My Big Glagwegian pal is over staying with me for a few days and the tree in the pics is one we planted last year in memory of his father. He is so pleased how well its doing. 2 of the pics are from last year when him and his mum came over to plant it and the other with wee betty in it is from yesterday.
My big pal brought his fathers ashes over with him on the boat to be added in with the tree. I remember at the time of planting so many people were saying that human ash will kill the tree. When I asked them have you added human ash in with a tree and watched what happened? No they haven't. Again another one of these hearsay BS things that people say in the nature world and everyone believes to be true. One person even sent me a video with a so called study about how human ash will kill trees. Not sure what garbage this was but its certainly not the case for me. I've added human ash in with tree plantings many times now and haven't had one tree die.
As you can see though my Big pals dads tree is thriving.
Our community orchards cost a lot of money and time to maintain. We dont get funding for what we do. Would be grateful for any donations.
