 So glad to see a bit of rain guys. 


I've been observing lots of my 1 year old bareroot heritage Irish apple trees that I phantom planted in winter past. I phantom planted around 400 on unused green spaces about Belfast. I havent watered any of them.  

The majority of them I gave a good thick layer of mulch around them and some I didnt. The ones I mulched are looking so much more healthier and less stressed compared to the ones I didnt mulch. 

The ones I didint mulch you can see over half the lowers leaves have truned yellow and are about to drop. Apparently the tree does this and sucks the moisture from some of its leaves to help keep the other ones going. Amazing!

Saying that though, the ones I haven't mulched are surviving and the tips of the trees are still fairly healthy. 


Me personally I will never plant larger potted trees again. I have still been watering 2/3 year old potted trees. 


The smaller and younger you plant your trees the better. They also root in better and will less likely need supported. I have no idea why councils plant these massive root ball trees that cost a fortune, take all sorts of stakes to hold them up and in many cases die in heatwaves like this. Also what I have been noticing too is so many of these larger planted trees fall over in storms. This type of root ball planting is relatively new and not natural. 

You want to try and mimic nature as best you can. 


This winter when it comes to my phantom planting antics I will be planting the fruit trees small in estates but invest more money into cages around them with information about the trees. It cost very little to grow the tree. Where as potted trees can cost anything up too £50 and I would have to water these for the next few years. 

Plant them small, invest the money into cages and information labels. Be patient and watch the hood turn into a proper nature loving Buddhahood. 


This is how I will be rolling from now on and I really do hope the councils join me on this one. Councils are spending way too much for very little results.

 My new home is getting delivered today! Can't believe it!  Thank you to everyone thats helped me buy this. It's been a long time coming for me.  My girlfriend thinks I've been living in penance for the past 7 years.
