Help yourself to an apple

 Its only this year that I've really got to taste so many of the heritage Irish apples. Had a Mrs Perry the other day on my walk and what an apple this was. It like fizzes in your mouth. I also had a Blood of the Boyne which is so sweet with a red tinge to the flesh on the inside. 

My favourite so far has been the Cavan Sugarcane. What a beauty. A massive apple that you would think would be a cooker, but this apple is as sweet as you'll get, hence the name. 


I have around 100 Cavan Sugarcane apple trees ready for phantom planting this winter. I am also planning on grafting 100s more this season.


There are still loads of apples down at The Belvoir Memorial Orchard aka The Phantom Planters HQ, next to the Boys Brigade football pitches South Belfast.  

Hundreds of massive phantom planted apple trees here laden with fruit. Everyone is welcome to go down and help themselves. If the apple comes off in one small click its ready to eat. If it taste tart like a cooker take it home and stew them and make pies or add over porridge. 


Seen a guy gathering up some of the windfall apples lying around the orchard the other day. These apples will be perfect also. If no bugs or insects have ate into them take them home and wash them. This is all the best of fruit, no pesticides, not stored in plastic for weeks if not months and certainly not flown from the other end of the world. 

They say the best thing we can do for the planet as a whole is grow our own foods organically. Its also the best thing for our own health too, mentally and physically.

  A bit about me and how I became the phantom planter. I grew up in a Loyalist housing estate in Belfast, my father a Protestant and my mother was a Catholic from Ardyone, that had big complications here in Northern Ireland but I always knew I was a mongrel, a bit different! Magnus Barefoot Grave!

Hidden away off the old train lines with a disused carriage lying in ruins just outside Downpatrick Northern Ireland lies the grave of Magnus Barefoot,  Viking King of Norway, it is believed he was killed in  battle in this area in AD 1103 and buried under the stone you can see in the video.  Love this part of the world, so historic!
