Miracle of the Mournes
Back in April 2021 we had a massive wildfire on the Mourne Mountains and hundreds of my phantom planted trees were destroyed.
This holly tree in the pic was one of the few survivors. Our local news paper did a story on it back then titled "Miracle of the Mournes".
Since then there has been another wild fire and yesterday I decided to take a walk up the mountains to have a look and see if this holly has survived again.
I couldn't believe my eyes. Talk about the Phoenix rising from the ashes!
You can see the remnants of its old scorched self and the new growth coming out from below that.
Out of the hundreds of trees I had phantom planted here over the years I only managed to find 3 survivors. The other 2 were hawthorns aka fairy trees.
Still this place is pretty special to me and I dont regret any of it. Many years ago when I was struggling with drink and drug addiction I used to buy loads of trees and just hit the mountain me and wee betty and make nature offerings. I gave up some of the money that I would have spent on self gratification and spent it on selfless service for nature. Apparently its the antidote and a way to self healing. Looking back now it couldn't make anymore sense. If your too cold you add heat. Too much selfish desire, you need to offer more of your being selflessly, with pure intentions. They say everything is about your intentions and motivation behind your thoughts and actions.
You gotta do these practices with a pure heart.
"Father of creation mother of nature please accept this tree as a token of appreciation for all that you provide for me".
This was my prayer back then that I said and still say after every tree I plant.
It also got me so fit going back up all the time checking on my trees.
What I have learned and would like to share with any potential phantom planters is dont phantom plant trees on mountain ranges where sheep graze. Because if the sheep dont eat your trees every 7 years or so its common practice to burn the mountain of gorse and bracken to stimulate new growth for grazing. This has been common practice for thousands of years.
Anyhow seeing this phantom planted holly tree survive 2 fires and still looking lush is a sure sign for me never to give up.
"Out of a muddy pond blooms a lotus flower".
As most of you know over the past 6 months hundreds of our phantom planted apple trees have been cut down. Seeing this holly has inspired me never to give up.
There is a war on nature and its completely obvious. Be part of the antidote and get phantom planting.
I challenge you all to phantom plant a tree
Peace and love
The Phantom Planter and Wee Betty
